The Viper Room: A Rock and Roll Institution

September 05, 2017

One of the hottest clubs on the Sunset Strip, The Viper Room was originally known as Melody Room, a jazz joint and favorite nightspot of gangsters Mickey Cohen and Bugsy Siegel. In the 80s and 90s, the venue was renamed Central, and in 1993 Johnny Depp and a few friends bought the club, rechristening it under its current name and quickly turning it into a popular hangout for up-and-coming as well as established film, TV, and musical talent. Acts as varied as Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, The Pussycat Dolls, and Shrinebuilder have all headlined at the club, and today, it regularly hosts big names in punk, metal, and alt rock. The downstairs area features an eclectic whiskey bar that stocks everything from Jack Daniel’s to the most obscure small batch whiskeys you’ll find anywhere. Open from 8 P.M. to 2 A.M. every night of the week, there’s always something worth seeing and hearing at the Viper Room, and with a special VIP room and bar that accommodates up to 25, it’s a great choice for private events too.
