The Best Improv in Los Angeles

February 07, 2018

Let’s be honest, when improv comedy is bad, it’s really bad, but when it’s good, it’s just about the most entertaining thing you’ll ever see. If you want a show that’s all but guaranteed to make you hoarse with laughter, you need to check out the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater’s most venerable showcase, Asssscat, which runs every Saturday at 8 P.M. and Sunday at 7 P.M. from now through December 30. This show features the UCB’s premier performers along with surprise celebrity improvisers (notables who’ve shown up in the past include Amy Poehler, Horatio Sanz, and lots of other SNL alums). Once on stage, the whole troupe then introduces a final special celebrity guest (someone like Sean Hayes or Lena Dunham) who tells a story that the other players will use to launch into a hilarious hour-long performance that’s made up right on the spot. Saturday evening tickets cost just $12, which is shockingly inexpensive for this caliber of top-notch performers. Sunday shows are free, but there are no reservations, so you’re advised to arrive at least an hour ahead of time to snag a seat.
